Images All our senses - our eyes, ears, nose, taste buds, and the feeling of the earth around our bodies - all this travels with us when we move from one place to another. Perhaps these pictures will evoke all your senses as you wander from picture to picture… from the ancient forests in Sado Jima, Japan to the blush of autumn leaves in South Korea to the cascade of colors in the cacti flowers in Arizona and so much more. go to Images Words All our senses - our eyes, ears, nose, taste buds, and the feeling of the earth around our bodies - all this travels with us when we move from one place to another. Two sentient beings are already a community. The following images express the wonderful community that surrounds us and represent our family and friends, all woven into a beautiful cloth that keeps us warm and embraced when life is cold. Fate has woven our lives together and as different as we all are to each other the tapestry is only more beautiful and rich because of that difference. go to Our People

The roots of what I bring to Sumeru grew over a lifetime of work in science (ecology) and art
(photography and literature). My focus was on a broad appreciation of Nature that includes
people and all the beings that keep energy and minerals pooling and whirling about our planet.
Stones move through those pools just a bit slower than we do, and who’s to say that the same
“art” that birthed crustaceans didn’t also come up with be-bop?

When I was a little girl, my mother regularly visited special women who could read the future from tarot cards.  I was more fascinated by the cards themselves, than the predictions these wonderful women would pronounce.  These cards were exquisitely complex and drenched in colorful mystical symbols.  I would immerse myself in these images for hours.  At the same time in my young life, my mother would periodically lug home thick catalogs filled with elegant pictures of gorgeous shoes.  I would deepen myself with the orderliness of the presentation of the shoes, each picture bursting with possibilities for a truly fulfilled life.  Now I go into the field with Jan and together we discuss infinite ways to express the complexity we perceive all around us, creating pictures that speak the same language as the tarot and the shoes did to me when I sat at my mother’s side as she traversed the Universe in her unique way.
