Creating or gathering the words and images you find here has inspired us for years. Your arrival enlivens this project – passing that inspiration out across the globe and back again. As we weave in impressions this tapestry extends along the bright line of our learning together.

Antonio Machado
An old master once advised,
Sweep every garden,
no matter how large.
The roots of what I bring to Sumeru grew over a lifetime of work in science (ecology) and art
(photography and literature). My focus was on a broad appreciation of Nature that includes
people and all the beings that keep energy and minerals pooling and whirling about our planet.
Stones move through those pools just a bit slower than we do, and who’s to say that the same
“art” that birthed crustaceans didn’t also come up with be-bop?
When I was a little girl, my mother regularly visited special women who could read the future from tarot cards. I was more fascinated by the cards themselves, than the predictions these wonderful women would pronounce. These cards were exquisitely complex and drenched in colorful mystical symbols. I would immerse myself in these images for hours. At the same time in my young life, my mother would periodically lug home thick catalogs filled with elegant pictures of gorgeous shoes. I would deepen myself with the orderliness of the presentation of the shoes, each picture bursting with possibilities for a truly fulfilled life. Now I go into the field with Jan and together we discuss infinite ways to express the complexity we perceive all around us, creating pictures that speak the same language as the tarot and the shoes did to me when I sat at my mother’s side as she traversed the Universe in her unique way.
